Tips for starting (& sticking with) your exercise routine

Regular exercise is a great way to compliment your healthy lifestyle.

However, for those of us that aren’t used to a regular fitness routine, getting started can be daunting. And even when we do get going, sticking with it can be quite the task.

Here are our best tips for starting and sticking with an exercise plan!

Pick A Fun Routine

Working out shouldn’t feel like a chore. Exercising doesn’t necessarily mean running on a treadmill or lifting weights in endless repetitions. With new classes and all sorts of different styles, pick something that interests you – like kickboxing, spin class, or Pilates.

Be Prepared

When you start a new routine, it’s important to be prepared. This can be as basic as having water with you to stay hydrated and making sure that your sneakers are fitted correctly to making sure that you have the right equipment. You can research information on the workout you’re trying to ensure that you have everything you need – from gear to tips for beginners and pre-work out supplements.

Track Your Progress

A problem that many people who start exercising often face is that they don’t see results as quickly as expected or they plateau after a certain amount of time. Instead, track your progress differently – increase the amount of time you spend on your bike or the distance you run. Find the reward in how you begin to adapt to your routine instead of what you see on the scale or in the mirror.

Take Rest Days

Remember that taking a break is important! Don’t let yourself feel guilty if you skip a day of working out, especially when you’re first starting. Too much too quickly can cause muscle fatigue. Just make sure that when you take a day off, you’re committed to going back and sticking with your routine.

Pick A Buddy

When it comes to staying motivated, sometimes partnering up is your best bet! Have your friend spot you at the gym or sign up for a class together. You can both be novices, or you can find a partner that’s more experienced who can give you pointers and the confidence you need to keep going!
